I myself was laid off and my social media mojo was the thing that not only got me employed but I fell into a new business that is about social media.

I think social media is the new frontier of SEO, PR and marketing. If you have an understanding of Social Media and also some real world savvy, you are set, the work and new business opportunities are out there.

Ian, right your are—with social media really being in its infancy, the field is wide open. Congratulations on diving in and becoming an expert. (Plus, my theory is that anyone with an English accent in the U.S. sounds instantly erudite, so cheers to you. :)

Its amazing how quickly you can pick up what to do, I have been seriously exploiting Linkedin for about 2 years but Twitter, Facebook, blogging etc etc only a matter of weeks. Already I am making the most of Tweetdeck (which I am not keen on) and Tweetlater - queuing up tweets and key word searching.

ALREADY I have sat on a panel speaking about social networking, I have just come back from the UK (I am a Brit living in NC) and Twitter is going ballistic - people were almost in a line to pick my brains! As I tweeted earlier today - "in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king!"

It was good you talk to the kids (if you are allowed to these days without being vetted!!!) about social networking because they will need to come out of school equipped for business and these days this means social networking!
